Three solitudes uncovered over who founded Canada:::::A new survey about the founding of Canada shows an

enduringly sharp divide between French- and English-speaking Canadians over who deserves the most credit for the nation’s existence.

The poll, commissioned by the Montreal-based Association for Canadian Studies ahead of this year’s 400th anniversary of Quebec City, also reveals that allophones — those whose first language is neither French nor English — are more likely to recognize the country’s aboriginal nations than Britain or France as Canada’s originators. Among French-speaking respondents to the Leger Marketing survey of 1,500 Canadians, 67 per cent agreed with the statement that the French founded Canada, while 57 per cent of English-speaking Canadians agreed with the idea that the British founded Canada.
